After the driver had been one of my bigger problems on the golf course in the last couple of years,I was very excited vwin滚球官网about the new Srixon. The first couple of shots felt really good to me,but I ended up handing it over to our tame racing driver:Konsti Schad„the stick" Schad. He really likes to speed things up a bit, especially when it comes to driving.See what he had to say vwin滚球官网about the newSrixon Europe Z785:

PING G410 Irons – Serious Game-Improvement

PING G410 Irons – Serious Game-Improvement

By ED TRAVIS

Way over 95% of golfers will not only never play at the professional level but will never be able to boast they have a single digit handicap and the reason is obvious…the inadequacies of our swings.

We can improve with lessons and practice and custom fitted clubs can to a degree let us "buy a game".It's essential to understand though, each year millions of dollars are spent by equipment makers in the quest to create just the right implements to compensate if not overcome our swing faults. In fact, this was the original idea behind having adjustable weights in metalwoods and perimeter weighting in irons.

Makers of irons use the label "game-improvement" for clubs intended for the typical weekend warrior with features to help correct our faults.Much of the weight in the medium size cavity-back head is pushed towards the edges with lots of flex in the face which often extends or overlaps part of the topline and sole.Game-improvement irons produce more distance, are easier to hit the proper trajectory and are forgiving,i.e.,preserve as much ball speed as possible when impact is not exactly in the center of the face.

PING's entry in this category for 2019 are the G410s and though they don't have the look of a classic blade, the topline is still a bit too wide, they are good looking with the head/shaft offset 10% less and overall head size 3% less than the 2018 G400s.G410s may never be mistaken for tour blades, they were never intended to be,but are worth very serious consideration for higher handicappers looking to move away from the extreme look of super game-improvement irons and for better players wanting some help with their long irons.

John K.Solheim,PING's President said,"In the G410 iron, our engineers challenged the idea that you can't make an iron smaller and increase the forgiveness at the same time. They've developed a clean, highly appealing design with less offset and a significantly higher MOI when compared to the G400 iron. It's the most forgiving iron of its size.It will appeal to a very wide range of golfers as it produces faster ball speeds, maximum forgiveness and amazing feel with a pleasing appearance – all the attributes they need to hit their iron shots higher, farther and straighter."

The G400s they replaced were very good but the G410s move to a different level of looks and performance.

Reshaping was key to the improvements and has resulted in faster ball speeds especially in the lower lofts.PING engineers were able to take weight from the face and move it to the toe and hosel which raised the modulus of inertia (MOI) or resistance to twisting by 8%.MOI is a good measurement of how forgiving a club will be.

Another improvement is additional face flex at impact and as we all know this means more ball speed and higher trajectory.PING says the face is "decoupled" from the head's weight structure, but you can interpret that to mean more of the face flexes which, with their COR-Eye face construction, gives the results golfers want.

"The G410 iron represents several exciting iron design advancements for us," said Solheim."Our innovations like COR-Eye technology have allowed us to re-imagine the way we engineer an iron.By increasing ball speed as much as we have in recent models, our irons launch much easier and higher than ever.As a result,we can experiment with the size and shape of the head while improving the MOI properties so critical to consistent performance."

Rees Jones,Halvonik return to LedgeRock

Rees Jones,Halvonik return to LedgeRock

LedgeRock Golf Club continues to burnish the regional reputation of its award-winning golf course, though the man newly chosen to lead this effort,Head Golf Professional Zach Halvonik, couldn't be more local.

Halvonik,a Sinking Spring native who starred at Wilson High School in West Lawn (and worked in high school at nearby Reading Country Club),took the reins here at LedgeRock GC (www.LedgRockgolf.com) in January. The Penn State graduate arrives home from upstate New York to help lead LedgeRock GC through its first major course renovation since the feted Rees Jones design opened for play in 2006.

"I caddied at LedgeRock a few times when I was in middle school.Back then I never realized I would be leading the LedgeRock golf operation one day," said Halvonik, who previously served as Head Golf Professional at Bristol Harbour Lodge & Golf Club in Canandaigua,NY,following a lead assistant gig at prestigious Oak Hill Country Club, site of three U.S.Opens,three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup.

"LedgeRock's reputation around the Northeast might surprise you.People know and admire it up in Rochester,I can tell you that — and out on Long Island [where Halvonik served as assistant professional at The National Golf Links of America].Folks know it as a pure,golf-only club where Rees Jones did some of his very best work — over truly dramatic terrain. When we finish these renovations,it's going to be close to perfection."

During 2019,Jones and his team will concentrate on two holes at LedgeRock — the downhill,par-3 10th and the uphill,par-4 17th — with plans to adjust other holes going forward.Ground has already been broken this spring on 10;it should open by Memorial Day Weekend. The plan for 17 calls for construction to be completed in late 2019.Alan FitzGerald, the only course superintendent LedgeRock has ever had, will oversee the effort using in-house construction crews.

The changes will be substantial: The 10th will be equipped with an array of new tee locations, allowing this single hole to play from as many as six new angles and elevations. At the somewhat notorious 17th,Jones will soften the club's most difficult hole.

"Every golf course needs to be reevaluated from time to time," said Jones (www.reesjonesinc.com)."At 17,we are taking out the cross bunker to make the hole more playable for every caliber player. On hole # 10,we are building more tee locations to create more shot variety on a daily basis."

Jones' design associate Bryce Swanson will direct the renovation measures on site.He explained that tree clearing on 10 got underway in 2018.

"These new tee positions make sense agronomically — more sun, more air movement, spreading the wear and tear around more tees — but they will also create some really cool, new angles of attack," Swanson said."The club deserves credit for taking the initiative here. They've demonstrated a real sophisticated vision for LedgeRock. What they did with that teaching facility, for example, was way ahead of its time — clubs just weren't doing that sort of thing 10 years ago.We relish the opportunity to complete that vision with the renovation of these two holes."

LedgeRock Golf Club opened in 2006,15 minutes southwest of Reading,on 212 acres of terrain marked by striking elevation changes and riven by half a dozen roaring brooks. In an era when golf courses and private clubs are closing down in droves,LedgeRock has thrived by doubling down on golf itself.

"We have no tennis courts or swimming pools here," noted General Manager Gerry Heller, who arrived in 2017 from Philmont CC in Huntingdon Valley, outside Philadelphia."It's a very lively, social place but our members are here for their golf. They're devoted to it.I've worked at elite clubs all over the country but I've never seen a Learning Center double as such a social hub."

Designed in a carriage-house style by the architects at Blackney Hayes, the LedgeRock Learning Center was among the first to offer state-of-the-art swing analysis and indoor hitting bays that deploy FlightScope,Boditrak and K-Vest technologies. There's a dedicated instruction studio,an indoor putting and chipping green, and an array of fitting systems for clubs (Titleist,Callaway,TaylorMade and Mizuno).

The complex, which also serves the club's oversized outdoor range/practice facility,is centered around a great room with adjoining patio and fire pit. With its own food & beverage capability, plus commanding views of the 13th and 14th holes, the Learning Center has proved a popular venue for corporate meetings.

"But we've got to be careful vwin滚球官网about that — the members just love to gather there," Heller said.
Golf courses nationwide are indeed closing in record numbers — a net loss of some 150 each year since 2008,according to the National Golf Foundation.私人俱乐部受到的冲击尤其严重;hundreds have closed outright, but hundreds more have been obliged to go public.Berks County alone has seen a dozen golf properties shuttered over the last decade.

Market forces would appear stacked against the success of LedgeRock, but Heller believes that ultimately they have contributed to it.

"Two quite prominent private clubs in Harrisburg also closed their doors recently and a number of those players have come to play their golf here," Heller explained."I could cite a dozen similar examples. It's terrible to see all these closures, but it has helped us evolve and grow as a club, strategically.Today we do view ourselves as a regional private club with members from outside what a typical private club would consider its ‘market'."

"The club has adjusted to what is a new, broader market," Halvonik added,"one that really extends past Harrisburg, north of Reading, south to Lancaster and all the way into the western Main Line suburbs. That's why we maintain the Kohl House," a charming 4-bedroom guest cottage where members can stay the night."The market determines a lot of what we do here, including renovating these two holes,to make the golf course that much better and attractive to prospective members."

Monday After the Players

Monday After the Players

By ED TRAVIS

This year as for the past several the media talked interminably vwin滚球官网about whether The Players should be designated the "fifth major."  To some this is a pointless exercise since the players themselves consider it to be very important tournament with far and away the strongest field, even the de facto holder of the title "major." Most fans could care less and file the discussion in the same folder as doing something vwin滚球官网about slow play.

And speaking of the bane of all golf, winner Rory McIlroy made the latest in his series of comments vwin滚球官网about his fellow toursters' slow play,"Honestly,I think they should just be a little tougher and start penalizing shots earlier, and that would be an easy way to fix it." However,it's common knowledge the PGA Tour does not insist players adhere to a reasonable time standard so nothing will be done.

The Players is the first important/major event effected by the changing of the season schedule so the finish will be before the start of football season. This starts a run of one-a-month biggies continuing with the Masters in April, the PGA Championship in May,U.S.Open in June, the British Open in July and in August the Tour Championship.

The two-month earlier date showed the TPC Sawgrass course at its best giving the field all they could handle with Sunday temperatures in the 50s and winds up to 20 mph.Just what everyone was hoping for when the March dates were penciled in with added problems created by the over seeding of rye grass.

Europeans dominated the top of the leaderboard.McIlroy is from Northern Ireland (Happy St.Patrick's Day!) leading the list of 10 non-Americans in the top 15 finishers. The best we could do was a second place by 48-year-old Jim Furyk, last year's Ryder Cup team captain. This doesn't bode well for U.S.international teams, either for the Presidents Cup matches in the fall nor the 2020 Ryder Cup against most of these same Euros but with my record of predictions don't take this warning too seriously.

We relearned the 17th island green is tough to hit even by the best players in the world dunked 45 balls for the four rounds. The question whether 17 would play harder in March than May you can decide for yourself. The previous five years of water balls on 17 when play was in May: 2018 (54),2107 (69),2016 (36),2015 (45),2014 (28).

老虎伍兹的表现毫无新意,不,to take Gary Koch's famous call from 2001,"Better than most." Woods ho-hum game could be illustrated with his quadruple bogey on the island green in round two and on Sunday coming down the par-5 16th at 3-under par for the round hitting at 15-handicappers iron shot 30 yards right of the green into the water. His response however was professional and classy with a very nice up and down for par.

Woods never looked like he could be a contender all week and with the Masters a month away he needs a lot more game to even be in the mix at Augusta much less have a realistic chance for a win.Fans were heartened though by no sign of any physical problems including the neck which caused his withdrawal at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The question remains.Should we looking at Woods as a 43-year old former great with some physical issues marking time for the PGA Tour Champions or the dynamic previously dominating player on his way to full recovery?

The Rules of Golf again leapt up and bit one of the players with Harold Varner III taking a two-stroke penalty for replacing a cracked driver head with a new one on the course rather than putting an entirely different driver in play. Not a new rule but still a shame it even had to be applied.

Finally,in case you missed it Friday, the reuniting of Paul Azinger now with NBC and Nick Faldo working for the Golf Channel the first two rounds with sportscaster Mike Tirico was a pleasant reminder of the trio last heard together over two years ago.

Stroke Lab from Odyssey – Control Distance

Stroke Lab from Odyssey – Control Distance

By ED TRAVIS

Distance control, not aim,is the key to becoming a good if not great putter and consistent distance can only come from a consistent repeatable stroke.Rather than concentrate on a new way to do alignment lines or making a new face insert to improve the ball's roll why not figure out a design that will improve distance control?

That's what Odyssey,Callaway Golf's putter division, did with their solution coming to market as the Stroke Lab putter line.

According to Sean Toulon,Callaway's senior vice president and general manager of Odyssey,"These new putters epitomize what Stroke Lab is all vwin滚球官网about.Questioning the norm for the purpose of developing putters that perform substantially better to help golfers make more putts."

With the speed of putting surfaces increasing due to advance in agronomy it's not unusual for even recreational players to face with a Stimpmeter reading of 10 or 11 during a weekend round. On the PGA Tour 11 and 12 are the norm and 13 or 14 are not uncommon.

In response makers have made putter heads heavier and heavier, often more than 350 or 360 grams, the thinking being that when greens are fast the stroke doesn't have to be as big.Part of this trend is the popularity of relatively lightweight larger grips which means putter swing weights have gotten extremely high sometimes as high as F3–a typical driver has a D2 swing weight.

Steel putter shafts usually weigh in the range of 115 to 120 grams but with heavier heads the typical shaft is relatively weaker allowing both more flex and torque.

The critical factor in the Stroke Lab design was to make the shaft from graphite with a steel tip section which Odyssey says reduced shaft weight by 40 grams. To keep the overall weight constant,10 of the 40 grams were moved to the head distributed in two sole weights. The remaining 30 grams went to the grip end with a 40-gram end weight (shaft plug) and a stock grip weighing 10-grams less. The shaft at 75 grams is lighter but with a much higher MOI (resistance to twisting) and the weight distributed to encourage a free and consistent stroke.Odyssey says testing of Stroke Lab putters showed a 25% improvement in backswing length consistency which makes the stored energy more reliable. The design helps to raise the consistency of the face angle at the end of the backswing by almost 20% so the amount of face rotation needed to be back at square at impact is more predictable.

"You feel the difference immediately," said Luke Williams, senior director of putter marketing."The putter head moves freely, smoothly and on a sound path, helping you roll the ball accurately while giving you greater speed-control."

All the Stroke Lab models have Odyssey's White Hot Microhinge face insert,a hit since its initial introduction in 2016.

On the course there no doubt the shaft of a Stroke Lab putter is different looking and different feeling. The balance of the head, grip and graphite/steel shaft are great. The Tuttle model was tested extensively on and off the course and it was one of very few putters in my experience didn't required a "break-in." There was no time wasted "getting used to it."

From the first it was simply a case of picking the line and making the stroke.

Instant confidence.

Did every putt go in?Of course not,but three putts are almost a thing of the past because if the first putt missed the second is close enough to be makeable…even a tap in.Phil Mickelson fans will recognize the #9 Stroke Lab as being the putter he used to win "The Match" against Tiger Woods and Francisco Molinari putted lights out in with a Toulon Madison model winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational making a 43 foot birdie on the 72nd hole.
